Bird & Bean: Designed with Love by a Mother of Two
“I have wonderful, authentic interactions with so many customers, everyday. It’s the best part of my job.”
— Janel Anderson, Founder (Bird & Bean)
What’s Your Story?
I opened Bird & Bean in 2016 after more than a decade designing and selling my kid’s line, Bird & Bean to other boutiques. The store is named after my kids — their nicknames are Bird and Bean. For about a year, I had a small, women’s section at the front of the shop and it did really well, so when the space next-door opened up, I took it over and opened Stitch + Sparrow.
What is the best interaction that you have had with a customer?
I have wonderful, authentic interactions with so many customers, everyday. It’s the best part of my job. I have watched pregnant bellies turn into babies who are now in kindergarten, looked through endless photos shown to me from proud grandparents, shared parenting resources, shared my knowledge of baby products with new parents to help them navigate through the endless array of choices, and most recently I have had so many lovely conversations with so many people about parenting and business-ownership during COVID. I see the shop as a space for shopping, of course, but honestly more of a way to authentically connect with my community.
What is your hidden gem? Maybe a delicacy or a unique item?
Our house brand, Bird & Bean — designed by me, a mom of two.
